Staff Pick Saturday Vol. 18: Pre Air Max Day Edition

Posted by Ross Dwyer at

Happy almost Air Max Day, Piff family!
It's been a crazy, Air-filled last week or so. Air Max is everywhere you look (not too bad, right?), and tomorrow is the culmination: Air Max Day. We've got our best pairs on deck, and we're sure you do too.
Since it's an important day for the culture, we had to bring you a very special Air Max Day edition of Staff Pick Saturday. Instead of picking our favorite items in-store this week, we're each picking our three favorite Air Max sneakers of all time, and explaining why we love them so much. Let's get to it.
Air Max 1 Premium "Patta x Para"
These aren't just one of my favorite Air Max, they're one of my favorite shoes period point blank. Patta's been involved in a lot of great collabs, but for my money this is their very best work. The burgundy upper is beautiful, and the accents give these just enough of a pop. A wonderful shoe.
Air Max 1 Supreme x Atmos "Animal Pack"
The "Animal Pack" at once works with everything and nothing. They're a mess of different prints and patterns, and even though there's no way something like this should work (let's be realistic here), it somehow all comes together perfectly.
Air Max 90 Premium "Warhawk"
The P51 Mustang fighter plane inspiration on these is absolutely nuts. Military colors with bright bold teeth on the front? There's no other Air Max 90 quite like these ... and that uniqueness why they're on my list.
Air Max 1 "Patch"
Everything about the patch pack Air Max 1's just works. The tonal military colors? Simple, clean, and easy-to-wear? The patches they come with? Endless options for you so you can make your pair all your own. Let's just say I know what I'm gonna be rocking tomorrow for Air Max day.
Air Max 1 x Clot "Special Box"
No regular boxes on this end. I've always been a big fan of Clot and the OG Edison Chen, and he put his best foot forwards on these, even on the botton (the best part in my opinion). From China with love. Special box love, that is.
Air Max 1 x Patta "Chlorophyll"
Can you tell that I like Air Max 1's? Bill's favorite Patta Air Max might be the burgundy joints, and although I will admit that they're hard .... the "Chlorophyll" pair is tops in my book. Sometimes less is more, and these are extremely clean.
Air Max 95 "Neon"
For my money, these jawns make a very strong case for best Air Max of all time. The design inspiration behind the 95's (the human anatomy) is the most unique in the Air Max line, and the colorway is still just as head-turning today as it was 22 years ago. When The Game said "I'll kill you if you try me for my Air Max 95's" on Hate It Or Love It, that might just have sealed the deal for middle-school me.
atmos Air Max 90 "Duck Camo"
You've gotta love these things. If someone told you "bright infrared, black, and duck camo" you wouldn't initially thing that would work together ... but it does beautifully. This is that rare shoe where everything clashes together to make a beautiful mess. Only the Japanese masterminds at atmos could come up with something like this ... and I'm still on the hunt for my pair.
Air Max 360 "White/Red"
I know, I know. You're probably surprised by this pick. There's a lot of great Air Max out there, and the original Air Max 360 isn't the one that would come to mind for a lot of people. However, this was the first pair of expensive shoes I ever bought with my own money, as a 15-year-old working at Champs. They were the most comfortable shoes I had ever put on, and I wore them half to death ... at least until I stepped on a sensor pin and popped the bubble on the right shoe. They didn't cover up the Air on the bottom back then.
Air Max Plus TN
The TN's are a crazy silhouette that don't get the love they should (except in the UK), and I don't think that you'd find too many people into TN's who'd disagree that these are the best color. These are still just as crispy and futuristic-looking today as they were when they released way back in 1999.
Air Max 90 "Infrared"
The standard. The OG Infrared 90's are one of the most timeless shoes in Nike's catalog. What do you really need to say about these? Just look at them. Thank you, Tinker.
Air Max 97 "Gold Medal"
Everyone's fawning over the "Silver Bullet" 97's, and although I'm excited for them to drop stateside too, they don't hold a candle to these gold jawns in my opinion. Gold>silver any day of the week. These just look like victory.
Air Max 1 "Kidrobot"
I rocked Kidrobot pretty heavy back in the day (tees, hats, you name it), but I could never secure a pair of these in my size. The brand's faded away, but real fire stands the test of time, and these shoes still look just as good today as they did when they were announced.
Air Max 90 x Eminem "Charity"
There's less than 10 pairs of these in the world, and realistically there's less than a 0.0000010 percent chance I'll ever secure a pair, but that's partially why they're so dope. They're arguably the Holy Grail of Air Max 90's, and I rock with anything Eminem related, so you already know I love these.
Air Max 95 Doernbecher "Flag"
There have been a few DB Air Max 95's, but the "Flag" colorway is by far the best. Catch me rocking these this 4th of July, flexing on all the American flag tank-top wearing folks. Independence day has never looked quite as steezy as it did on these bad boys.
