Happy New Year's Eve, Piff family.
We're ready for 2017, and we're sure that you are too. But before we move along into the new year, we're going to look back at the best of this last year one more time. For the final Staff Pick Saturday of 2016, the Piff staff is going to share their favorite shoe of the year, their favorite collab of the year, and their favorite piece of apparel from the year. The final hours of 2016 are ticking away ... so let's get right to it.
Shoe-Air Jordan I "Banned"
I've always been a sucker for Jordan I's. They're what I call a "3 C's" shoe: clean, classic, and comfy. You can wear these with literally anything, and they look great beat up too. Jordan Brand really did a classic shoe justice.
Collab-Kith x Bape
Everything from the Kith and Bape collab was off the chain. From the simple, co-branded apparel that effortlessly fused the signature logos of both companies together, to the extremely high-quality footwear (Ronnie always comes correct with the quality), this collab was a winner from top to bottom.
Apparel Piece-Supreme 3M Reflective Headband
They don't call me the headband gawd for nothing. It's rare you'll catch me without a Supreme headband on (and I'd like to note I've been wearing them since well before they blow up) ... so you already know the 3M reflective jawn was my favorite piece of 2016.
Shoe-Air Jordan XI "Space Jam"
Jordan XI's were one of the first sneakers that I really fell in love with, and this year's Space Jams were a home run in my book. From the packaging to the details (gotta love an embroidered 45 on the back) to the higher cut on the patent leather, these hit the nail right on the head.
Collab-Bape x Adidas
I know, I know. Go ahead and call me a hypebeast all you want. It won't change the fact that the Adidas x Bape collab was the best of the year. The most hyped-up shoes since the Yeezys and a co-branded Bape and Adidas puffer shark jacket? How could you not love this collab?
Piece Of Apparel-Noah "Look Of Love" Tee
One time for the gawd Brendon Babenzien. Noah churned out great graphic tees, hoodies, and more all year ... and this "Look Of Love" tee was my favorite. Simple and clean with a classic art style. This tee is gonna be in my rotation for many years to come.
Shoe-Adidas NMD "Human Race"
I'm of the opinion that Pharrell can do no wrong. Just look at the man's track record: literally everything he touches turns to gold. He can take anything and put a new, creative, fresh twist on it, and that's exactly what he did with his Human Race NMD's. Many a sneakerhead was iffy on these jawns when they originally dropped (the first color is still the best too), but they blew off the shelves and became one of the hottest shoes of the year. Chalk another one up for Skateboard P.
Collab-Carrots x Rare Panther
Carrots and Rare Panther are two of the most gassed brands out right now, and their collaboration took them both to a new level (word to A$AP Ferg). The Fairfax influence is evident in every piece from the collection, and I can only hope that Anwar and Wallo will link up for more projects in the very near future.
Piece Of Apparel-Supreme Patchwork Anorak
I love anoraks. They're a truly unique piece of apparel that are a lot of fun to work into your fit, and Supreme's patchwork anorak was my favorite piece of apparel this year. It's guaranteed to turn heads everwhere you go, and even though it's loud to the point of being garish, its extreme mis-matching somehow still seamlessly blends with everything.
Shoe-Nike Air Force 1 "Linen"
Forces will always have a special place in my heart. I don't wear them as much as I used to back in the day (when they were pretty much an everyday pair for me), but I'll always love a fresh pair of lows. That's why I've gotta chose the Linens for my shoe of the year. An extremely limited release of arguably the best AF1 ever in collaboration with Futura and available only at Art Basel? V rare. V rare indeed.
Collab-Gucci x Gucci Ghost
There was a wonderful blurring of the lines between high fashion and streetwear in 2016, and no collab showcased it better than Gucci and GucciGhost. The fact that a high-fashion house would let a graffiti artist who became famous for ripping off their designs become an actual partner and lend his touch directly to their official garments is super dope, and really unlike anything we've seen from Gucci before.
Piece Of Apparel-Kith x Columbia Verado Anorak
Piff gang=anorak gang. Ross and I both love anoraks, and this piece from the wonderful Kith x Columbia collection is easily my favorite of the year. Warm enough for winter but light enough for fall and spring with just a little puffy action, this is an extremely versatile piece, and the light pink colorway goes great with a lot of jawns in my wardrobe.
Shoe-Adidas x Nice Kicks NMD
I'm gonna go ahead and venture a little off the beaten path for my sneaker pick. It feels like these Nice Kicks NMD's were released forever ago, but for my money they were the best NMD release all year long. I mean, come on ... how could you not love a tie-dye Primeknit upper?
Collab-Supreme x Undercover
I feel like the Supreme x Undercover is an easy choice to make for the collab of the year, but I'm gonna go ahead and make it anyway because it was simply the best. Supreme has introduced Jun Takahashi's legendary designs to a whole new audience with their collabs, and every piece from this collection was dripping with Supreme and Undercover's signature defiant attitude.
Piece Of Apparel-Supreme x Gucci Mane Photo Tee
YEAHHHHH ... IT'S GUCCI (insert ice cream emoji here). Apologies. Now that I got that out of my system, let's talk about my favorite piece of apparel from this year, the Supreme x Gucci Mane photo tee. No rapper had a bigger comeback this year than Guwop, as he began dropping great music almost immediately upon his return from jail and became a huge pop culture icon. He even got to grace Supreme's infamous photo tee for the F/W season, so you already know that had to be my pick.
